$4.5M Truck Staging Upgrade to Port of Townsville
The Port of Townsville’s recently unveiled plan to undertake a major truck staging upgrade, expected to be completed in early 2021, is a welcome addition to the Port’s logistics facilities.
The Port of Townsville is an important gateway for Queensland and more broadly, Far North Australia, connecting major towns and infrastructure projects from Townsville to Darwin and beyond.
Distribution Direct’s Managing Director, Anthony Stevenson welcomes the announcement.
“It’s an important investment in the region and upgrading the transport and logistics facilities at the Port has been on agenda for some time,” said Stevenson.
Catering for up to 20 triple road trains upon completion, the truck staging project will improve the efficiency for all of Northern Queensland logistics.
“The staging area will deliver immediate benefits in eased congestion and safer onsite movements with a dedicated staging area for trucks,” added Stevenson.
With investment and a focused effort to deliver by early 2021, Distribution Direct anticipates that the project will encourage sustainable, long term logistics growth in local regional, rural and remote communities.
“We’re looking forward to being part of and promoting the Port’s broader improvements that are aimed at attracting greater shipping volumes through Townsville.”

Improved Efficiency and Amenities
Townsville Port General Manager of Infrastructure and Environment, Marissa Wise said the facility would reduce congestion and improve safety within the Port and along Port access roads, while improving the efficiency of cargo handling and freight operations.
“The facility will also include amenities and an outdoor rest area for truck drivers. Only Port authorised trucks will be allowed to access the facility, which will have surveillance cameras monitored by Port security,’’ she said.
RMS Engineering to Lead Construction
A leading provider and operator of Civil Engineering projects and local company, RMS Engineering have been awarded $4.5 million to commence the project.
Managing Director, Richard McDonald said that the project would support the economy by providing local jobs, and also support the company’s growth in Northern Australia.
“The Port of Townsville plays a vital role in creating and sustaining direct and indirect jobs in the city and this $4.5 million project is an important part of helping the Port grow in the future,” said McDonald.
“This project will see around 16 people full time employed and many part-time trades,’’ he said.
